ランタンフェスティバルで隊員がボランティア

第12海兵飛行大隊（MAG-12）の海兵隊員が3月2日、愛宕スポーツコンプレックス内のゴーゴーフィールドで開催されたスカイランタンイベントにボランティアとして参加した。これは非営利団体ブルー・アート・プロジェクトが主催したもので、発達障害啓発イベントとして行われた。ボランティアで参加した隊員たちはカラーコーンの設置やランタンの組み立て、パフォーマーが使う小道具や材料などの運搬、イベント終了後の清掃を行った。岩国基地からはボランティアだけでなく、多くの家族連れや隊員が地元の日本人と一緒に参加していた。「私たちは日本人と同じ言葉を話しているわけではありません。ですが、私たちアメリカ人と交流したり、出会うことを喜んでくれている印象を受けました。」と話すのは第171海兵航空師団支援中隊（MWSS-1

第9回日米交流合同コンサート

華陵高校と周南国際交流児童クラブが岩国基地を訪問

華陵高校と周南国際交流児童クラブの生徒、教員、保護者、パフォーマーが2月11日、マシュー・ペリー高校を訪問し、アメリカ人生徒と文化交流をした。英語を学んでいる華陵高校の生徒は日本語を勉強中のアメリカ人を訪ねた。生徒たちはそれぞれ、相手の言葉で質問をしたり、それに答えたりして、会話を楽しんだ。また、スカベンジャーハント（何かを集めて得点を競うフィールドゲーム）に参加し、ヒントをすべて読み解くために日本語や英語で読んだり書いたりした。「今日は7名の生徒と一緒に来ましたが、とてもうまくできています。」と話すのは、華陵高校のウメジ・テツロウ先生。「アメリカ人生徒の皆さんは日本に住んでいますので、（今日のような試みは）彼らが交流する一つの手段であり、自分も嬉しく思います。うちの生徒たちも興奮しています

ルーツを学ぶ：レンコン堀り体験

岩国基地住人が2月5日、岩国市の卸売市場を訪問し、レンコンについて学んだ。基地住人に地元の特産品であるレンコンがどのように育ち、食卓に並ぶのかを学んでもらうため、文化交流プログラム（CAP）がこのツアーを主催した。「他の国の文化がどんなものなのかをよく理解することは素晴らしいことだと思います。食べ物は文化の中でも大きな部分を占めています。」と話すのは、この日参加した基地住人のジャナ・ベセルさん。「レンコンはアメリカ人の食生活にはないものですが、岩国では主要な産物だと知りました。そのレンコンを使った料理を食べて、日本文化を少し理解できたと思います。」CAPは基地住人が地元の文化を理解し、岩国市民と絆を感じられるようなユニークな文化体験ツアーを提供している。参加者は最初に料理教室で4品のレンコン

岩国基地隊員が老人養護施設を訪問

米海兵隊岩国航空基地、岩国海上自衛隊、米海軍佐世保基地の隊員が2月2日、岩国市内にある老人養護施設の錦寿苑と陽だまりの家を訪問し、節分の豆まきに参加した。米軍と自衛隊の隊員たちは伝統的な日本文化を体験し、ホスト国との絆を深めようと施設を訪問した。豆まきは日本の伝統行事で、春の到来を祝って豆をまく。施設を訪問した隊員たちは「鬼は外、福は内」と声を出しながら豆をまいた。「豆をまくことで、邪気を追い払うことができると考えられています。」と話すのは、第152海兵空中給油輸送中隊（VMGR-152）、固定翼機クルー・チーフのジェシカ・ピーターソン伍長。「個人的に、この豆まきのようなことは大好きです。このようなイベントに参加すると、必ず日本文化から多くのことを学べるからです。」この日は最初に、施設の入居

周防大島から基地の子供たちにみかん贈呈

岩国基地で1月28日、マシュー・ペリー・エレメンタリースクールとイワクニ・エレメンタリースクールの児童にみかんが贈呈された。日本人生産者が基地の学校を訪れ、児童たちにみかんをプレゼントした。みかんは日本を代表する果物で、生産者は基地の子供たちが日本にいる間に味わってほしいと、毎年贈呈している。「岩国基地の子供たちは何世代にもわたって、みかんが大好きだと聞いています。そのみかんを皆さんにプレゼントできてうれしく思います。」と話すのはJA山口大島の木村昭彦組合長。みかんは日本原産の柑橘で、タンジェリンやクレメンティンと近いミカン属ミカン科の品種で学名は「Citrus
