岩国基地は、２０１４年日米親善デー（フレンドシップデー）を、例年と異なる内容ではありますが、ことし５月５日に開催予定であることを喜びとともにお知らせします。

岩国という地元の一員として、長年にわたり、基地の受け入れ国の方々へ米軍航空基地のゲートを開放し、アメリカの文化や習慣を分かち合い、また日米安全保障同盟の保有する能力を展示してきたことは、基地の誇りであり、また喜びでした。文化への理解をより豊かに広げる親善デーの精神は、いくつもいくつも重ねてきた年月を通じて、基地にも地元にも、お互いに有益な実をもたらしてきました。またそれゆえに、基地も隣人、友人の皆様を、アメリカ本土より離れた場所にありながら現在のふるさとである「私たちの家」へご招待してきたのです。

この心温まる伝統を続けていく作業の中で、基地は数多くの壁に直面しました。中でも最も大きな課題が、現在も継続中の米国政府の財政抑制政策です。

数々の困難があったとしても、岩国基地の親善デーの精神は健在です。またそれこそが今回、例年と異なる限定的な形であったとしても、親善デーを開催したいという一心で前へと進む決意の原動力となりました。

２０１４年日米親善デーでは、日米双方の所属部隊から多くの航空機や関係車両、装備の地上展示などを予定しています。また、これまでの親善デーでみられたような食べ物のブースや地上でのイベントは、今年も同じように予定しています。

残念なことに、先に述べた財政上の制限により、２０１４年日米親善デーでは航空ショーは行われません。また基地内の広範囲で行われている工事のため、個人所有の乗用車、オートバイ、原付の基地内への乗り入れは禁止されます。フェリーによる接岸もできませんが、観光バスと岩国市のシャトルバスは基地内に入ることができ、警備チェックののち、前もって指定されたバス用駐車場へと案内されます。

イベント詳細については、いまも親善デーに向けた計画と調整が進行中なので、後日、公式発表が行われる予定です。報道機関へ向けては、今後、発信する情報の内容次第で、追加情報を含むお知らせが出るほか、記者会見が開かれる見込みです。

Media Advisory (2014 Friendship Day)

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni takes pleasure in announcing the 2014 U.S.-Japan, limited-scope, Friendship Day, scheduled for May 5, 2014.

As part of the larger Iwakuni community, it has been our pleasure and honor over the years to open the air station gates to the people of our host nation, in order to share our American culture and customs, and to display the military capabilities supporting the goals of the U.S. – Japan Security Alliance.  The culturally enriching spirit of Friendship Day has been mutually beneficial for years and years, as we have invited our neighbors and friends to our “home away from home.”

In our efforts to carry on this heartfelt tradition, we have faced numerous challenges, most notably the continuing U.S. Government fiscal constraints. 

In spite of these challenges, the MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day spirit is alive and well, and is the driving factor in our decision to push ahead and hold a limited-scope version of Friendship Day.

Friendship Day 2014 will include many static display aircraft, and other associated vehicles and equipment, from both U. S. and Japanese local units. As well, many of the same foods and activities available in previous Friendship Day events will again be available this year.   

Regrettably, due to the constraints outlined earlier, Friendship Day 2014 will not include air performances. Similarly, as a result of the extensive on-base construction projects, privately-owned vehicles, to include motorcycles and mopeds, will be prohibited from entering the base, as will ferry services; commercial charter and Iwakuni City busses will be allowed entry, and, once inspected, will be directed to the appropriate pre-designated parking location.

Additional details will be officially released later, as planning and coordination for Friendship Day 2014 continue. Anticipate additional media advisories containing amplifying information at a later date, as well as a possible future press conference, depending on information flow requirements.
