海兵隊岩国航空基地は、アメリカ独立記念日の打ち上げ花火を今年は行わないことを発表した。基地はこれまで伝統的に、アメリカの独立を祝い、毎年恒例の花火を７月４日もしくはその前後に行ってきた。

多くの協議を経たのち、基地と基地内組織の指導層がこの難しい決定を下した。

独立記念日は梅雨のピークの期間中にあたり、２０１１年や過去数年においてなど、これまでも多くの祝賀イベントが雨天のため延期されている。このことは、イベント出席者へ不便をかけるほか、基地の総合的運用のすべての面に影響を与える物流上の問題を新たに生んでしまう。

この祝日がすべてのアメリカ人にとってどれほど重要なものか、また、基地を受け入れて下さっている多くの日本の人々がこのイベントを楽しんできたか、基地は承知している。もちろん基地は、アメリカの独立記念日を祝うが、今年は花火なしでということになる。基地では打ち上げ花火を、年内のいずれかの時期に行うことを検討している。

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (May 31, 2012)

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni has announced that the air station will not hold an American Independence Day fireworks display this year. The air station traditionally holds an annual fireworks display on or about July 4 in celebration of American independence.

After much deliberation, station and tenant organization leadership has made this difficult decision. Independence Day is during our peak rainy season, historically the majority of celebrations have been postponed due to rain, including 2011 and several preceding years. This inconveniences attendees and creates logistical challenges impacting all aspects of our collective operations.

We are aware of how important this holiday is to all Americans and enjoyed by many of our Japanese hosts. We will celebrate, but this year without fireworks. The command is considering holding a fireworks display later in the year.
