基地を一般開放するイベントとして４５回目となる海上自衛隊第３１航空群/米海兵隊岩国航空基地フレンドシップデーでは、大空いっぱいに広がる航空ショーと盛りだくさんの地上展示で、皆様に幅広いエンターテインメントに満ちた一日をお届けします。海上自衛隊と共催する基地の一般開放では、日米両国の航空機が空を駆け巡るショーで肩を並べるほか、民間のパフォーマーや、海兵隊ならではの航空戦力と地上戦力が一体となって作戦行動を展開する海兵空陸任務部隊のデモンストレーションなどを予定しています。

岩国基地は、５月５日に開催するフレンドシップデーへ参加予定のパフォーマーについて、ここに喜びとともにお知らせします。アメリカ海兵隊員、海軍、空軍の兵士が、日本の陸、海、空各自衛隊員と手を携えて、故郷から遠く離れ現在わたしたちが住まいとするこの基地へ、皆様をお迎えできますことを楽しみにしております。参加予定のパフォーマーは、都合により変更される可能性があります。

航空ショー:
海上自衛隊セレモニーフライト – 岩国基地に拠点を置く海上自衛隊の航空機が、地元である岩国の空をセレモニーフライトで彩ります。
航空自衛隊ブルーインパルス – ２０２４年のフレンドシップデーに、航空自衛隊のアクロバット飛行チーム、ブルーインパルスの出演が決定しております。次々と繰り出される息を呑むような空中演技と正確で緻密な飛行は、地上の観客を大きな興奮の渦に巻き込み、日本の国内外で高く称賛されています。
航空自衛隊F-2 – 航空自衛隊より、空対空および空対地での任務遂行能力など多目的用途に備えた、単発エンジンの支援戦闘機F-2 の展示飛行を予定しています。F-2は、目をみはる機動性能と同時に、そのスピードや馬力に優れた航空機として知られています。航空自衛隊の展示飛行ともなれば、どの航空ファンも見逃したくないものの一つでしょう。
陸上自衛隊ラぺリング – 日米親善交流の一環として、陸上自衛隊第１３旅団の部隊が２０２４年フレンドシップデーに参加します。山口県の山口駐屯地より第１７普通科連隊が、多用途ヘリコプターUH-1Jに乗って空から登場。陸上自衛隊のレンジャー隊員が、上空で停止した状態のヘリコプターからロープを地面に降ろし、降下します。陸上自衛隊の精密かつ高い技術をご覧ください。
チーム・ファストラックス – アメリカのスカイダイビングチームであるファストラックスは、パラシュート降下をイベントで披露する世界最大級のプロフェッショナル集団です。これまでも世界各地、カタールのドーハやフランスのノルマンディー、そしてここ岩国でも、スカイダイビングによるショーを披露してきました。日米の同盟を示す両国の国旗をはためかせながら大空から地上へ。チームは、岩国の観客の皆様の視線を釘付けにすることを楽しみにしています。

室屋義秀 – WAC世界曲技飛行選手権などのエアロバティック競技大会で腕を磨いてきた室屋義秀氏は、２００９年にレッドブル・エアレースの世界選手権に参戦したアジア人初のパイロットに、そして２０１７年にアジア人初の年間総合優勝を果たしました。エアロバティック競技を広く知ってもらおうと日本各地で航空ショーを実施しているほか、母国である日本におさまらず東アジア、海外の地でも航空スポーツの人気を押し上げることに貢献しています。

ウィスキー・パパ – ２５年以上にわたり大空を駆け巡るキャリアを積んできた内海昌浩氏は、数多くの国際エアロバティック競技会に参戦。岡山県の岡南飛行場を拠点に、「ウィスキー・パパ」として日本各地の航空ショーに出演している人気のパイロットです。

F-35B ライトニングII – 第１海兵航空団隷下にあり岩国基地に拠点を置く第１２海兵飛行大隊より、短距離離陸・垂直着陸（STOVL）能力を持つ第５世代のステルス戦闘機F-35Bが登場します。実際の飛行のほか、機体の地上展示も実施予定です。
F/A-18E/F スーパーホーネット – 岩国基地に拠点を置く第５空母航空団より、F/A-18スーパーホーネット戦闘攻撃機が航空ショーで飛行を、また地上でも複数機体の展示を行います。
海兵空陸任務部隊（MAGTF）– それぞれの異なる動きの詰まったこの飛行展示では、海兵隊の持つ運用の多様性と力強さをお目にかけます。海兵空陸任務部隊とは、ほかの軍にはない海兵隊ならではの特徴で、４つの要素：司令部隊、陸上戦闘部隊、航空戦闘部隊、兵站戦闘部隊とを組み合わせ、空と地上とが一体となって運用するやり方や編制された組織のことです。航空ショーでは、米海兵隊が遠征展開先の環境で実施する活動のようす、多種多様な航空機による近接航空支援がどう行われるのか、地上への兵力の投入を空からどのように行うのかなどを、間近に見ることができます。
第５空母航空団の航過飛行 – 岩国基地に拠点を置く第５空母航空団が、所属する多彩な航空機を引き連れて航過飛行を実施します。

地上でのイベント、地上展示：
フレンドシップデーで一般開放された基地内では、海上自衛隊、航空自衛隊、陸上自衛隊、また米海兵隊、米海軍、米空軍から、さまざまな種類の軍用機や装備を地上に展示して皆様をお迎えします。

都合により変更の可能性はありますが、日米の数多くの航空機が地上展示に登場する予定です。現時点で計画されている地上展示は、この限りではありませんが、アメリカ軍からはF-35B、P-8、EA-18G、F/A-18E/F、E-2、HH-60、SH-60、CH-53E、AH-1Z、UH-1Y、KC-130J、UC-12W、KC-135、A-10、MV-22Bなどを予定しています。日本の自衛隊からは、US-2、P-3、U-36A、MCH-101、F-2、F-15、T-5、TH-135、TC-90、SH-60K、AH-1S、AH-64D、C-2などが参加を予定しています。

加えて、山口県の航空自衛隊防府北基地から、航空学生によるファンシー・ドリルが披露されます。航空自衛隊の航空学生が一糸乱れぬ隊列を組み、教練で学んだライフル操作などの動作を取り入れた、美しい集団演技をお見せします。

実際に軍の運用で使われ酷使に耐える頑丈な装備品に興味津々の方なら、フレンドシップデーは、日本の陸上自衛隊やアメリカ海兵隊の地上部隊が持つ色々な装備や能力を目の前でうかがい知ることのできる貴重な機会です。岩国に拠点を置く第１７１海兵航空師団支援中隊が、重機などの装備のほか、各種用途で使われる軍用特殊車両を展示します。

私たちは、ここ岩国で日々見ることのできる日米の友情と協力という志を、日米双方で共有することをとても大切にしています。日本の皆様との文化的なつながりをさらに深めるため、また岩国基地の中で長年にわたり培われてきた日米安全保障同盟の強靭さを知っていただくためにも、普段は閉じられている基地の門を開き、皆様をお迎えできることはこの上ない喜びです。

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Apr. 11, 2024) - 

Marking the 45th anniversary of our open house, the JMSDF Fleet Air Wing 31/MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day offers a full spectrum of entertainment with static displays on the ground and aerial performances. The joint open house will feature U.S. and Japanese aerial demonstration teams, a Marine Air-Ground Task Force demonstration, and civilian performers.

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni takes pleasure in announcing performers who are planned to participate in the JMSDF/MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day, which will be held on May 5. Japanese Air, Maritime and Ground Self-Defense Force service members alongside U.S. Marines, Sailors, and Airmen look forward to welcoming you to our home away from home. Flight Displays:

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ceremonial flight –Iwakuni-based JMSDF aircraft will be pleased to demonstrate a ceremonial flight over their home community.

Japan Air Self-Defense Force Blue Impulse – MCAS Iwakuni is excited to announce the participation of Blue Impulse, JASDF’s special aerobatic demonstration team, for Friendship day 2024. Through their astonishing aerobatics and precision-flying demonstrations, Blue Impulse draws great excitement from wonder-filled spectators and has won high praise from both inside and outside of Japan.

Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-2 – The Japan Air Self-Defense Force will be showcasing its F-2 multirole, single-engine fighter aircraft, which is popular for its air-to-air and air-to-surface capabilities. The F-2 is known for its incredible maneuverability, speed and power. This is an aerial demonstration every aviation enthusiast will want to see.

Japan Ground Self-Defense Force airborne rappelling demonstration – As part of the U.S.-Japan friendship exchange, JGSDF units under the command of the 13th Brigade will participate in Friendship Day 2024. The JGSDF 17th Infantry Regiment, Camp Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi, will be in attendance with their UH-1J multi-role helicopter. Spectators will be thrilled to watch JGSDF rangers rappelling down from the helicopter hovering in the air with a high level of skill and precision.

Team Fastrax - America’s Skydiving Team Fastrax is the largest professional parachute demonstration team in the world. Having performed thousands of exhibition skydives at numbers of locations at Doha, Qatar, Normandy, France, and here in Iwakuni, Japan, the team is excited to thrill the spectators again in the performance of diving in the sky, flying the bilateral colors of the U.S.-Japan Alliance.

Yoshihide Muroya –Yoshihide Muroya gained experience flying in competitive aerobatic competitions such as the World Aerobatic Championships (WAC). The first Asian pilot joining in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2009, and the first Asian pilot to win the world championship title in 2017. Yoshi now holds air shows throughout Japan to generate public awareness in aerobatics, and has helped raise the popularity of the sport not limited in his home country of Japan but in East Asia, and more into the world.

Whiskey Papa – Flying for more than 25 years, Masahiro Utsumi has competed in many international aerobatic competitions. Based out of Kohnan Airport in Okayama, Whiskey Papa is a popular air-show pilot in Japan.

F-35B Lightning II – The F-35B, a 5th generation short-takeoff, vertical landing (STOVL) stealth fighter, will be showcased by the MCAS Iwakuni based Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing with ground static displays and a flight display.

F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet –The F/A-18 Super Hornet will be showcased by the MCAS Iwakuni based Carrier Air Wing FIVE with ground static displays and a flight display.

Marine Air-Ground Task Force Demonstration – An action-packed demonstration that showcases the diversity and power of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The MAGTF is the organizational structure of the Marine Corps and is made up of four elements: command element, ground combat element, aviation combat element, and logistics combat element. During the MAGTF demonstration, audiences will be thrilled with extended capabilities of Marine Corps assets to perform in expeditionary environments as various aircraft provide close air support and aircraft insert troops on the ground.

Carrier Air Wing FIVE Flyover – Aircraft assigned to the Iwakuni based Carrier Air Wing FIVE, will have a flyover of a variety of their aircraft.

Ground Events and Static Displays:

On Friendship Day, MCAS Iwakuni will be filled with a full variety of military aircraft and equipment from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force as well as the U.S. Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.

Subject to change, we currently have numerous U.S. and Japanese aircraft static displays. The planned displays include, but are not limited to, the following: F-35B, P-8, EA-18G, F/A-18E/F, E-2, HH-60, SH-60, CH-53E, AH-1Z, UH-1Y, KC-130J, UC-12W, KC-135, A-10, MV-22B from U.S. military inventories. From Japan Self-Defense Force aircraft static displays will include the following: US-2, P-3, U-36A, MCH-101, F-2, F-15, T-5, TH-135, TC-90, SH-60K, AH-1S, AH-64D, C-2, and more.

Additionally, a performance by the JASDF Fancy Drill Team from Hofu Kita Air Base, Yamaguchi, will be held. JASDF aviation cadets will demonstrate their rifle techniques in synchronized movements while in formation.

For those who are interested in heavy-duty military gear, Friendship Day offers a unique opportunity to get a hands-on experience of the ground combat capabilities of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force and U.S. Marine Corps. Iwakuni-based Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 will be displaying heavy equipment, utility equipment, and a wide variety of military vehicles.

We greatly value the shared spirit of friendship and cooperation that is evident every day in Iwakuni. It is our pleasure to open our gates to the Japanese community to further our cultural connection and showcase the strength of the U.S.-Japan Alliance present all year long aboard MCAS Iwakuni.
