米海軍佐世保基地に前方展開しているアヴェンジャー級掃海艦パトリオットが海兵隊岩国航空基地に５月１２日、予定されていた寄港を行った。

パトリオットは、２００７年にも岩国基地に寄港している。岩国基地ではこれまでにも、２０１０年にオリバー・ハザード・ペリー級フリゲート艦レンツを迎えたほか、２０２０年５月に日本の陸上自衛隊が運用するV-22オスプレイが初めて日本に陸揚げされた際も、港湾施設を使用している。

海兵第１２飛行大隊、海軍第５空母航空団、海上自衛隊第３１航空群の拠点と港湾施設とを併せ持つ米海兵隊内で唯一の施設として、岩国基地は、地域内における安全保障と日米同盟を支えている先進の海軍海兵隊の統合を実現する、ほかに例をみない位置づけにある。

「我々は日米二国間の海事にまつわる統合運用をここ岩国基地で体現している」と岩国基地司令のランス・ルイス大佐。「岩国基地が提供する米海軍、米海兵隊、そして日本の海上自衛隊への支援は誰にも劣らず、我々の地域の安全保障に対する取り組みは、こうした統合運用によって実証されている」

岩国への寄港中、パトリオットの乗組員は岩国基地の人員とのソフトボール親善試合など、海兵コミュニティサービスが提供するさまざまな活動を楽しむことになっている。

第７対機雷戦隊に所属する掃海艦パトリオットは、パートナーとの相互運用性を高め、不測に事態に対応可能な即応プラットフォームとして機能すべく、第７艦隊の担当地域内で活動している。

U.S. Navy Mine Countermeasures Ship visits MCAS Iwakuni

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (May 12, 2021) –

Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Patriot (MCM 7), forward-deployed to Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan, arrived at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni for a scheduled port visit May 12.

Patriot previously visited MCAS Iwakuni in 2007. The base also hosted Oliver Hazard Perry class fast frigate USS Rentz (FFG 46) in 2010 and the harbor was later used for the first offload of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force V-22 Ospreys delivered to Japan in May 2020.

As the only Marine Corps installation with an organic port facility and host to Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG 12), Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW 5), and Fleet Air Wing 31 (FAW 31), MCAS Iwakuni is uniquely postured to provide advanced naval integration in support of regional security and the US-Japan alliance.

“We embody bilateral naval integration at MCAS Iwakuni,” said Col. Lance Lewis, the air station commanding officer. “Our support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and the Japan Self-Defense Forces is second to none, and our commitment to regional security is demonstrated by our integrated operations.” 

During the visit, Sailors from Patriot will enjoy activities provided by Marine Corps Community Service, including a friendly game of softball against air station personnel.

Patriot is assigned to Mine Countermeasures Squadron 7, operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with partners and serve as a ready-response platform for contingency operations.
