米海兵隊と米海軍の人員が１月２６日、岩国基地内の海軍診療所でモデルナ社製の新型コロナウイルスワクチンを接種しました。 
 
米国防総省のワクチン接種計画は、段階的に進められています。世界中の国防総省の人員が任務への即 応態勢を支え能力をより高められるよう、可能な限り迅速かつ安全にウイルスから国防総省の人員を守 るのがねらいです。 
 
岩国基地司令のランス・ルイス大佐は「基地のワクチンの第一陣は、国防総省のワクチン接種計画で定 義されている通り、医療従事者とファーストレスポンダー（災害・事故など緊急時に即時対応にあたる 人員）に提供される」と説明。「何よりもまず最優先は、救命救急の最前線で対応している人々を私た ちが確実に守ることだ」 
 
ワクチンは現在、軍人に対し任意ではあるが、強く推奨されていることをルイス大佐は説明。接種の機 会を与えられたならば、仲間である軍人や皆を守るため、医療の専門家はワクチンの接種を推奨します。 
 
新型コロナウイルスに対するワクチンは、大規模かつ三段階に分けられた臨床試験で安全性と効力が示 され、米食品医薬品局の承認を得て、安全かつ厳重に管理された製造過程と配送を経てはじめて接種が 可能となったものです。 
 
「一連の過程には信頼を置いており、ワクチンを受けるつもりだ」とルイス大佐。 
 
岩国基地は管轄地域の安全保障と日米同盟の支えとなる海兵第１２飛行大隊、海軍第５空母航空団、海 上自衛隊第３１航空群をはじめ、様々な駐留部隊の拠点です。

U.S. Marine Corps and Navy Personnel Receive Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine 
 
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Jan. 26, 2021) –

U.S. Marine Corps and Navy personnel received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at the Iwakuni Naval Family Branch Clinic at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, on Jan. 26. 
 
The Department of Defense’s COVID-19 vaccination plan is phase driven and designed to protect members within the DOD from COVID-19 as quickly and safely as possible in order to bolster mission readiness and enhance capabilities of DOD members worldwide. 
 
“Our first wave of vaccines are offered to medical personnel and first responders identified by the DOD’s COVID-19 vaccination plan,” said Colonel Lance Lewis, the commanding officer of MCAS Iwakuni. “Our initial priority is ensuring we protect those who are on the front lines of responding to medical emergencies.” 
 
Lewis explained that the vaccine is currently optional for service members, but highly encouraged. When given the opportunity, medical personnel recommend receiving the vaccine to protect fellow service members and the general population. 
 
Vaccines for COVID-19 are only available after they are demonstrated to be safe and effective in large phase-three clinical trials, have been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and have been manufactured and distributed safely and securely. 
 
“I’m confident in the process and I plan to receive the vaccine,” said Lewis. 
 
MCAS Iwakuni is home to Marine Air Group-12, Carrier Air Wing FIVE, Fleet Air Wing 31 of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, and multiple other tenant commands in support of regional security and the U.S-Japan alliance.
