米海兵隊岩国基地所属の海兵隊員、海軍兵士、また日本の陸上自衛隊員は、演習「アクティブ・シールド」の終了式を１０月３０日、ともに迎えました。

演習「アクティブ・シールド」はアメリカ軍と自衛隊とで例年実施している二国間演習であり、日米同盟のもと、即応態勢にある海軍海兵隊の遠征兵力ならびに地域への断固たる関与を岩国基地が確実に支援し続けることができるよう、基地施設の防衛計画にあるさまざまな項目を訓練します。

演習の期間中、アメリカ軍ならびに自衛隊は複数のシナリオを通じ、岩国基地ならびに地域内のその他施設を警護、防衛し、軍としての運用を維持できるよう相互運用能力を磨き上げるためともに訓練しました。

今回の演習での特筆すべき達成項目としては、感染症疾患の発生に対する防御を想定し４８時間以内にアメリカ軍人の対象９０パーセント以上にインフルエンザの予防接種を実施すること、日米双方のヘリコプター運用のため基地内の司令部前広場に前方展開時の補給拠点を設置すること、また重要なインフラ基盤に発生したと想定する模擬損害に対し迅速に復旧や修復作業を行うことなどがあげられます。

終了式の際、岩国基地司令のランス・ルイス大佐は肩を並べて整列した日米双方の隊員に対し、こう訓示しました。「今年は我々の同盟が６０周年を迎える。こうして（諸君の顔を）見渡せば、この同盟の力強さがよくわかる。我々のパートナーシップは我々をより強靭にする。来年の本演習が楽しみだ」

MCAS Active Shield

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Oct. 30, 2020) – 

Marines and Sailors from Marine Corps Airs Station (MCAS) Iwakuni and Soldiers from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) met for the closing ceremony of Exercise Active Shield, Oct. 30.

Active Shield is an annual bilateral exercise partnering U.S. and Japanese forces, which exercises various elements of the air station’s base defense plan to ensure the station remains able to support the Naval Expeditionary Force-In Readiness and regional commitments to the U.S.-Japan Alliance.

During the exercise, U.S. and Japanese forces trained together across multiple scenarios to hone their interoperability for the protection and defense of MCAS Iwakuni and other assets in the region in order to sustain military operation.

Notable achievements during this exercise include administering the influenza inoculation to more than 90 percent of active duty U.S. service members within a 48 hour period to simulate defense against an epidemic, establishing a forward arming and refueling point on the installation parade field for Japanese and U.S. helicopters, and the rapid restoration and repair of critical infrastructure in response to simulated damage.

During the closing ceremony, Col. Lance Lewis, commanding officer MCAS Iwakuni, addressed a joint formation of U.S. and Japanese troops. “This year marks the 60th anniversary of our alliance and, when I look around, I see the strength of that alliance,” said Lewis. “Our partnership makes us stronger, and I look forward to this training next year.”
