第１２海兵飛行大隊報道官マルコ・ヴァレンズエラ大尉より次の声明文を報道機関に発表する。

島根県浜田市の海岸沖で２０２０年７月２日に行方がわからなくなっていたミズーリ州カンザスシティ出身のタイラー・M・ランキン３等軍曹（２４歳）の死亡が５日、宣告された。日本の海上保安庁をはじめ地元当局が７月２日、ただちに捜索活動に出動、５日夕刻に海兵隊員の遺体を収容した。

「第１５２海兵空中給油輸送中隊スモウズは、仲間であるタイラー・ランキン３等軍曹を失った悲しみに打ちひしがれている」と第１５２海兵空中給油輸送中隊司令クリストファー・コキャブ中佐はコメントを発表した。「ランキン３等軍曹は部隊内でも真にリーダーであり、職域に精通したエキスパートであり、数多くの者が偉大なる友人と慕っていた。ご遺族ならびに近親者に心からのお悔やみを申し上げる。彼が残していった功績を忘れない」

ランキン３等軍曹は米海兵隊岩国航空基地に赴任し、第１海兵航空団、第１２海兵飛行大隊隷下の第１５２海兵空中給油輸送中隊に所属する固定翼機のメカニックとして任務に就いていた。海兵隊へは２０１４年に入隊、勲功など表彰歴は以下の通り：
the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Marine declared deceased

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Jul. 7, 2020) –

Sergeant Tyler M. Rankin, 24, from Kansas City, Missouri was declared deceased July 5, 2020 after going missing on July 2, 2020 off the coast of Hamada Beach in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Search and rescue operations by the Japanese Coast Guard and local authorities were immediately dispatched on July 2 and successfully recovered the Marine’s remains on the evening of July 5.

“VMGR-152 “Sumos” mourn the loss of their brother at arms, Sergeant Tyler Rankin”, said Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Kocab, commanding officer of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152. “Sergeant Rankin was a true leader within the squadron, a subject matter expert within his field, and a great friend to many. We send our heartfelt condolences to all of Tyler’s family and close friends and will never forget the impact he left on all of us.”

Sergeant Rankin was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and served as a fixed wing aircraft mechanic with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. He joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and his awards include the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
