米海兵隊岩国航空基地 -- 米海兵隊岩国航空基地は１２月１２日（水）午前、追悼式典の一環として編隊を組んだ航空機が１度通過する「Missing Man」編隊飛行を基地にて執り行います。
今回のような「Missing Man」編隊飛行は、イギリスに倣い１９３８年に導入されたアメリカ軍の伝統です。編隊飛行のうち１機が空高く上昇することで、飛行隊形の中で「Missing Man」（いなくなった人物）が占めていた空間が空いてしまったこと、また命を落としたパイロットが天国へ旅立つ様を表しています。さらにこの飛行は、遺族や軍人にとって、家族や仲間を失った喪失の心情を象徴するものでもあります。基地が喪に服すに際し、地元の皆様のご理解とご支援をお願い申し上げます。

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Dec. 11, 2018) –
Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni will conduct a single-pass, "Missing Man" formation flight as part of a private memorial service scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 12, aboard MCAS Iwakuni.
A tradition adopted from the British in 1938, missing-man formation flights such as this, where one aircraft pitches skyward, opening up the "Missing Man" space in the formation and representing the fallen aviator's departure to the heavens, is also a symbol of the loss to family and fellow service members. We mournfully ask for the community's support and understanding at this difficult time.
