岩国基地で10月18日に実施された「サウンド・オブ・フリーダム（自由の音）」活動で、岩国市自治会連合会の方々を案内する妹尾陽子さん。岩国基地司令補佐官の妹尾さんは、「このような活動は非常に重要です。それは岩国基地が毎日、日米同盟関係の支援や日米両国の防衛、日米の一般市民の生活を守っていることを地域住民や自治体関係者、議員の方々に理解してもらう機会だからです。」と話す。妹尾さんはまた、この活動の目標について「基地の任務の中には日本の国防を間接的に支援しているものもあり、そのようなことについて、参加者の皆さんに理解を深めてもらうこと」だと付け加えた。妹尾さんの仕事は来訪者が基地の任務を理解し、なぜ海兵隊が日本に駐留しているのかを正しく理解してもらうこと。「サウンド・オブ・フリーダム（自由の音）」活動は、地元の指導者が基地の運用や第12海兵飛行大隊（MAG-12）の即応性維持の重要性を理解することに役立っている。写真：リチャード・レモーン兵長
